My Annual "I Hate Cinco de Mayo" post....

May 2, 2008 / by iluvtpr3

Okay, so here it is.  I start to cringe as the commercials start popping up on the radio and on tv.  This year I was even invited to a party and my first response was "I will come if you can explain to me what exactly you are celebrating.."  Well, let's just say I'm not going.   This was originally written in 2006.  Enjoy!

Okay, I probably do have a stick up my ass but I don't really care. I absolutely hate when someone wishes me a Happy Cinco de Mayo. I ask them in return what does that exactly mean? Of course they have no frickin' clue. "Oh, uh, Mexico's Independence Day?"

WRONG LOSER!! That would be September 16th.

It is a reason for Americans to go out and get drunk. It is an Americanized holiday. Nothing wrong with that, just don't wish me a Happy Cinco de Mayo. You just sound like another ignorant American. Isn't having one in the white house enough, really?

For those who would like to be educated, it is the celebration of a battle that occurred in the town and state of Puebla.

Mexico had just fought the Spanish for their independence and had to ask France for help. When Mexico had gained its independence France came around asking for its money to be paid back. Of course Mexico couldn't pay them back so France invaded the state of Puebla on its way to Mexico City.

The natives of Puebla fought off the French and won. It was considered a great victory since Napoleon's army was considered to be the best in the world and they had been defeated by a bunch of half armed indians.

Unfortunately the celebration did not last long because Napoleon's ego was hurt and he was so pissed that he sent in 30,000 more troops to kill all those in Puebla. It was a massacre. For three years after that France actually ruled Mexico.

So, Cinco de Mayo acknowledges the Battle of Puebla of 1862. It is a regional holiday that is celebrated in Puebla, Mexico.

So if you are going to celebrate have a clue as to what you are celebrating.

I'm done. Now don't wish me a Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

It is so funny that  you posted this as yesterday I was thinking to myself, "What the heck is Cinco de Mayo?" Now, I know all about it. But, I must admit I did use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to eat some guacamole!

I am glad that I could answer your question.  By the way, you don't ever need an excuse to eat guacamole.
