Okay, I am finally getting around to writing about the big event.
It's funny how just when you are done with one thing you are always set to go to the next thing. For me that would be exams. I have been busy this week working on my exam review packets and next week I have to have my exams written and ready to go. I can see the end of the tunnel. I am finding it quite difficult to stay motivated with so little time left at this place.
Well, this past Saturday Marisol had her first communion. The morning started with her hair appt at 10am. It was pouring down rain. Not a good way to start our day. So in her rain boots and a buttoned up shirt we had her hair done. We were there about an hour. Marisol had not washed her hair for two days so that everything would hold for the long day ahead. Let me just say that it did. Quite impressive. I believe at one point in the party we did notice that it was slightly leaning to one side, but that was about it.
Just after 11am we got back to the house. There really wasn't anything left to do with Marisol so she sat and watched some television while I got myself showered and dressed. The dress and shoes (the actual shores are not shown in the first few pictures) I bought the night before at 7pm. Those of you who have kids know how it goes. You do everything else for everyone else and you are last. I had taken a personal day from work the day before and got all of my stuff done. I knew I would have to do that, otherwise I would have not been ready for the big day and stressed beyond belief. I had my hair cut, got a wax, had my nails done and got a pedicure. All that was left was my dress and shoes. Nothing like the last minute, eh?
Once I was dressed and ready I helped Marisol on with her dress. With her veil in and her hair all done it was amazing. I was quite happy with myself and how the dress turned out. I have to admit that I had my moments with that dress where I thought I was going to lose it, but seeing Marisol in that dress and that big smile made it all worth it. We took a few pictures before heading out. It takes us about 20 minutes to get to our church and with the pouring down rain I had to give myself some extra time.
I dropped Marisol off at the door and told her to run for it. I had my rain coat and umbrella plus some sandals as not to get my new shoes all wet. Once in the church we took some pictures up on the altar and with family. Marisol had to join her classmates at 12:30 and at 12:50 they lined up for mass to start at 1pm.
One thing that happened was that there was a horrible accident off one of the main interstates that takes you to our church. So at the start of mass there were empty pews and many people came in late, including some of those receiving first communion. It was awful. The whole time during the mass you could hear the rain pouring down on the roof. Right at the end of the mass the rain suddenly stopped and the sun came out. It was amazing. So I was able to take some pictures outside of the church when it was all over.
Most everyone left right after the mass. We still had half an hour until the party started and Marisol had to arrive last so that the DJ could announce her. So we drove around a bit and you can see in one picture she was not happy about it. Once we arrived she was announced and it all went very well. I have to thank my good friends, Anne and Chris plus their significant others, for arriving early and setting everything up for the party while we were all at the mass. It was perfect. Just as I had hoped, if not better.
We had all sorts of people there. We served pulled pork bbq with lots of sides. After the meal Marisol cut her cake. Once we all finished eating she had a dance with her dad and with my husband. Then everyone went out and danced. Overall it was just right. Not over the top, not too much.
The next day once everything was over with I asked her what was her favorite part of the day and she said, "Dancing the macarena with my girlfriends."
To be eight years old again.
